DAY 29--CORINTO, NICARAGUA

                                                         HAPPY ST PATRICK'S DAY

BACKGROUND/HISTORICAL INFO:
Corinto is in the northwest Pacific coast of Nicaragua and is its largest and only Pacific port for imports and exports.  This is our first visit here.  Seems the only reason for our calling on this port if for the ship’s excursions today to Nicaragua’s former colonial capital of Leon.  So let me talk about Leon.
The first city of Leon was founded by the Spanish in 1524 but was abandoned in 1610 due to a series of earthquakes and moved 20 miles east to its present location.  It is the second largest city in Nicaragua with Managua, the capital, being the largest.  Leon was the capital of Nicaragua until 1852 when Managua was made its permanent capital.
The former colonial capital of Leon is now beloved for its colonial architecture, especially Leon  Cathedral which is the largest in Central America.  The cathedral was built between 1747 and 1814.  Leon now is an important industrial, agricultural, and commercial center for the country.  Nicaragua exports sugar cane, cattle, peanuts, bananas, and sorghum.

What We Did Last Night:
The best ever on a Regent ship, veal parmesan.
Some nice spaghetti to go with it.
Our pieces were huge.  Could not finish it.
Eka, our favorite waiter, on left, with Nemanja, the head waiter, with us.
Chef Dino came by to make sure we had enjoyed the veal.
After dinner Rebecca, Jane & Melissa went to the show and I went to bed.

What We Did Today:
We got up at 7:00 am as I had planned on going on the 8 hour tour again today with Jane & Melissa but I decided not to go.  When we docked there was three groups of local entertainers on the pier right below our balcony.  They took turns playing and dancing for two hours so I stood out on the balcony to watch and listen.  Had I gone on the tour I would have missed it.  The group of dancers were really good but their drummer accompaniment (probably 10) were loud and eventually got on Rebecca's nerves.  Could hear them loud and clear even with our balcony door closed.  I took several videos of them with sound so you can enjoy them also.  They were entertaining the whole time people were getting off the ship and loading into the tour buses.
At 9:30 I went up to do my hour long 4 mile walk on the jogging track. Nice and peaceful up there today and no one to try to pass.  It was hot though!  Then I decided to go off the ship and take a bike taxi tour around town.  There were several of these bike taxis on the pier.  I asked one how much it was for a tour and he said $10.  I told him I would pay $5.  He said no but asked another guy who said yes.  So off we went.  He drove me around for 50 minutes when I asked him to just drop me off at the plaza as there was a lot of activity there that I needed to take photos of.  The guy did not speak English but we managed to communicate.  Funny guy too.  I took a video of him with sound as he had different sounds he made even sounding like an ambulance.  I gave him $10.  He even stopped at two pharmacies for me.  Neither had what I needed.  Anyway, the plaza is just a couple blocks from the entrance to the dock.  Very close!!
Back on the ship for lunch in La Veranda.  Saw the Captain there and thanked him for docking with the entertainment right down from our balcony.  The four of us will be joining him for dinner this evening up in Prime 7.
St Patrick's day cake at noon in La Veranda buffet.

There is another production show in the theater tonight, "Broadway in Concert".  We saw it last segment but may go again tonight.  We sail at 6:00pm for our next port, Puntarenas, Costa Rica.  We are scheduled to be there from noon to 10:00pm.

Ok, here is the link 85 photos that I took TODAY here in Nicaragua.  I hope the videos will work for you as I know you will really enjoy them.  Please turn your speakers on!!  Remember to view the photos you will have to "copy & paste" the link to a "new tab" on your browser.  Then click on the first photo to enlarge it and be able to read my captions in upper right corner.  Arrow through photos with the arrow mid way down side of the photos.
