DAY 18--CABO SAN LUCAS, MEXICO

We arrived at our anchorage just off Cabo at 9:00am, an hour early.  It will take them a while to lower tenders (life boats) to take us into the marina.  Water is too shallow here for a dock.  There will be two other cruise ships here with us today.
This is the world famous Los Arcos at Land's End.  Will be taking boat tour there next week.
Looking at Cabo from our ship.  Clicking on these photos will make them bigger.

NCL's Norwegian Star
Holland America's Vollendam
The is one of the other ships here today.  NCL Star.  Other is Holland America's Vollendam.  We were actually on the Vollendam when it first came out several years ago now.  We were enlisted to help them make a commercial for the ship.  Of course, we were not paid!!!

BACKGROUND/HISTORICAL INFO:
Commonly called “Cabo”, it is a resort city at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.  It has been rated as one of Mexico’s top five tourist destinations (as far as I am concerned it is #1 and the safest of all Mexican ports) and is known for its beaches, scuba diving,  marine life, sport fishing, golfing, and an attraction called “El Arco de Cabo San Lucas”.  You will be seeing my photos of it later.  Pods of whales can be observed in the area during the winter months as they bear their calves here in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico after migrating down from Alaska.  We have been to Cabo on cruises in 2003, 2006, 2008, 2014, and 2017, so this will be our 6th time here and will be stopping here for 7th time in 6 days on our 2nd segment of this cruise on our way from LA to Miami.
Archaeological diggings have found evidence of human inhabitation in the area for at least 10,000 years.  The actual first European to have founded Cabo San Lucas is disputed.  A Japanese castaway is said to have arrived here in May 1842.  Another claim is an Englishman was first to arrive here in 1828.  Yet another claim is Jesuits as a Catholic mission founded it in the mid 1700’s.  Who knows, but then who cares I guess!  In any event the Pericu Indian people were here when the Europeans first came.
The last census was in 2015 and showed 81,000 lived here but Cabo has experienced a rapid growth since then.  Most non-Mexican inhabitants here come from the USA.

What We Did Last Night:
We were invited to this in-suite cocktail party at 5:30 in the evening.  This is a Grand Suite and is 1000 sqft in size with another 1000 sqft balcony.  Very nice but too big for us.
Our host is man with hat on, Igbar Kassam.  His wife, Yasmin, is standing behind him.  They live in Vancouver BC.
There were 3 butlers serving us.
                                                         This is some Indian canapes.
This is our executive chef, Sean.  I had asked him to prepare some fried seafoods for dinner in honor of Mardi Gras.
There was lobster, soft shell crabs, shrimp, and calamari here.
Well, it had been a little over cooked and greasy.  Still good however.

What We Did Today:
                                                           Boarding the tender.
Yes, I hate tendering!!  Rebecca got off ship today for first time since boarding on Feb 17th.
Getting off tender at the marina

Shopping along the marina.  Our mission was to go to Walmart today.  Negotiated taxi from $35 down to $24 plus he had to stay and wait on us while we shopped there.  After all of that, we did not find what we wanted and came back empty handed.
Back on the ship by 12:30 so had some lunch up in La Veranda.  Sat out on upper deck for awhile this afternoon as at 2:00 pm they began transforming the pool deck into a BBQ buffet and dining area for the "dinner under the stars" from 7pm to 9pm this evening.
We do not dine "under the stars" so asked Chef Sean to prepare another round of veal parmesan for us in Compass Rose for tonight.  I will go up and take photos of the buffet at 7pm so you can see how amazing it is after they transform the pool deck into a restaurant.  Those will be on tomorrow's blog post as we will have Thursday and Friday at sea again.  Tonight we don't sail until midnight.
