DAY 7--SALAVERRY, PERU

Background/Historical Info:
We are actually docked today in the port town of Salaverry which located 9 miles to the southeast of Trujillo.  This port was built in the 1960’s by an English company and so is now able to accommodate large ships including cruise ships.
Trujillo with a population of nearly 1 million in the metro area is the 2rd largest in Peru.  It is located on the banks of  the Moche River near where it flows into the Pacific Ocean.  This is the site of the great prehistoric Moche and Chimu cultures.  The Moche culture flourished in northern Peru from about 100AD to 800AD.  The Moche built the Temples of the Sun & Moon which is the largest adobe pyramid in Peru.  It is one of two major archeological sites to visit here near Trujillo.  The other was built later by the Chimu and is Chan Chan, the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in the ancient world.  The Chimu culture arose around 900AD and flourished until 1470 when the Inca Indians conquered them.  When here in 2012 I took the tour to Chan Chan.  I found it so fascinating that I took the same tour again when here in 2016.  Over 1300 years ago when the city of Chan Chan was built it was 10 square miles in size with a population of around 100,000.  Made totally of mud the roofs are gone now but they have built some protective roofs to help preserve the site.  This archeological site is simply amazing and a must see if you are ever here.
Trujillo was one of the very first cities in the Americas to be founded by Spanish conquistadors.  The first settlement was made here in 1534 and was the home city of Francisco Pizarro (remember him from your world history studies?)  After many years of Spanish colonization and rule, Trujillo was the first city in Peru to declare its independence in 1820 from the Spanish.
Today, Trujillo has greatly expanded due to extensive irrigated agriculture.  Sugar cane is a major industry along with rice and asparagus as ag products.  A lot of white asparagus is exported from here.  Peru is the world’s largest asparagus exporter.  There are also knitting mills, breweries, and shoe factories here in Trujillo.  Because of the Moche and Chimu archeological sites, tourism is also a major industry.

What We Did Last Night:
We once again had our pre-dinner cocktails in the Meridian Lounge.  Then we went up to Sette Mari, the Italian restaurant, for dinner.  They transform half of the La Veranda buffet used for breakfast and lunch into an Italian restaurant at night.  It really is very nice atmosphere there.  Here is the link to photos I took last night.

What We Did Today:
We had room service breakfast at 8:00.  Rebecca miss marked the order card last night and they brought me blueberry pancakes instead of a blueberry muffin.  We did not arrive along side the dock in Salaverry until 11:00 as scheduled.  We went to the gym for our normal workout this morning.
I was suppose to go on an 11:00 tour to "El Brujo" but canceled it.  It was to be 1 1/2 hours drive each way in the bus (not a fan of long bus rides).  Then an hour visiting a museum (I am not a big fan of museums) and an hour seeing the archeological site with remains of the Moche civilization.  They built this complex sometime between 1AD and 600AD.  It was another Huaca made of adobe bricks much like what I saw yesterday on my tour in Lima.  Only difference is this one today was built by the ancient Moche civilization.
Finally talked Rebecca into going up to Prime 7 for lunch.  She had grilled chicken Caesar and I had grilled salmon Caesar.  Later in the afternoon I worked on downloading and printing my credit card recent statements and paying them through our back online.  Internet works faster when everyone is off ship on tours!

This evening after cocktails we have reservations for dinner in Prime 7.  Will be going to the show for headliner entertainer, Don Bryan.  He is a master ventriloquist.  He's very good as have seen his show on another cruise.
Tomorrow is a day a sea on our way to Guayaquil, Ecuador.  This is another port we have visited twice on previous cruises.  Today we received an invitation to dine at the Captain's table tomorrow evening.  I tell Rebecca she dines with a Captain EVERY night!!
