What We Did Last Night:
While having cocktails in the Meridian Lounge there was a private party for the Virtuoso travel group (we are not part of it). All the ship's senior officers were in attendance. Massimo, our General Manager, chatted with us and later brought the Captain over and introduced him to us. After telling him I had also been a "Captain", he was more interested in talking to us than the party. We spent probably 15 minutes chatting. He said he would arrange a private bridge visit for us and I suspect we will be his dinner guests later on in the cruise. His name is Rosario Vasta from Sicily but his name tag just said "Saro". We have not sailed with him before.
We then dined in Compass Rose with one of out very favorite waiters, Eka. Eka is from Bali and we have sailed with him several times. He loves the Kit Kat mini candy bars we bring for him. We both had escargot as appetizer, spinach salad, and veal osso bucco for our entree. Everything was delicious. I always bring a large bag of mini candy bars with us on cruises just like I did when I was flying to Buenos Aires. Then I gave it to the front desk people at the Intercontinental, our layover hotel in BA. They called me "Captain Candy" and always knew when I was there. They loved it, and as a result, I was usually upgraded to the Executive Floor rooms. Well, Regent crew members also love candy. We give it to the room service people, waiters, bus drivers when on tours, and bar staff. It always brings a big smile from them.
WHAT WE DID TODAY:
Good morning from the Pacific Ocean just offshore western coast of Chile. The Atacama Desert is running along the coastline here. It is the driest desert in the world with practically no rainfall each year. As usual it is overcast this morning but should be sunny later today. Now it is 68 degrees and once again our sailing has been very smooth again last night.
Rebecca had her scrambled eggs and coffee from room service delivered promptly at 8:00. I went down to coffee connection for coffee and a sweet roll before going to the theater for Terry Breen's lecture, "Skywatchers of Ancient America". We have sailed with Terry twice before on our Circle South America cruises and on our Regent Alaska cruises. I refer to her a walking, talking encyclopedia on both areas of the world. She does not use notes when lecturing. She knows here subjects that well. This is Terry just prior to her lecture.
Then the 10:30 lecture is by John Maggio as part of the PBS (public broadcasting) series on board for this cruise. His topic is "Korea-War and Memory". It is billed as a sneak peak of the upcoming PBS tv special, "The Never Ending War". This should be airing in the US around April 29th and I HIGHLY recommend you watch this 2 hour documentary on PBS stations. John made the documentary and showed clips of it during his lecture. He said it will be aired on the ship's tv during this cruise. Fascinating and now even more relevant with President Trump having second meeting with North Korean leader in couple weeks.
While I was at lectures, Rebecca went to the gym. I will be going later this afternoon. She is having an Atkins bar for her lunch. She has these most every day for her lunch even at home. It is way she diets.
I went to have my lunch in Prime 7 where I can order a piece of grilled salmon with salad. I try to stay away from the lunch buffet. Everything there looks so good and hard to resist slapping it on my plate! I had this Caesar salad with nice, perfectly cooked medium piece of salmon. REALLY good! This afternoon I did a 4 mile fast walk (took an hour) around the jogging track. Nice, sunny, and 72 degrees.
Tonight is the Captain's Welcome cocktail party in the theater prior to dinner. It is one of two formal nights on this cruise so I will be wearing my tux. We have been invited to dine at Caron Moran's table for dinner in Compass Rose at 7:00 pm. Caron is a friend and the Social Hostess on this cruise. Here is just part of tonight's menu.
After dinner tonight the show in theater at 9:30 is featuring another PBS entertainer. She is a Tony Award winning singer who has performed on Broadway, Debbie Gravitte. She will be singing Broadway show tunes.
The Captain makes a PA at noon every sea day with our position and current & forecast weather. So at noon we are cruising 75 nm off the coast of Chile at 18 kts. Skies are overcast with temperature of 70 degrees. Seas are calm and will remain that way rest of day and overnight. Love it!!! We will be arriving at Iquique, Chile, tomorrow at 8:00 am.
